How SoundCloud Launched My EDM Friend’s Career

Let me take you back to 2017. My broducer, an under-the-radar EDM producer making tracks on a secondhand MIDI controller, uploaded a glitchy future bass remix of a retro video game theme to SoundCloud. Within days, it exploded. Fans in Tokyo blasted it at underground raves, a Barcelona collective added it to their "Cyberpunk Chill" playlist, and a mid-sized EDM label slid into his DMs. Fast-forward to today: He’s headlining boutique festivals, and that remix just hit 1.5 million streams. His secret is SoundCloud—the platform where niche EDM genres thrive, no mainstage clout required.

The Underground Rave Hub That Rewrote EDM History

Born in Berlin (the birthplace of techno), SoundCloud emerged as the digital analog to illegal warehouse raves. Unlike Beatport or Spotify, it welcomed unpolished bootlegs, experimental drops, and 3 a.m. DJ sets. By 2013, it became the breeding ground for EDM’s new guard:

Flume’s early future bass demos (like Sleepless) blew up here before Triple J picked them up.

Porter Robinson used timed comments to crowdsource feedback on Language, tweaking the drop based on fan reactions.

Charlotte de Witte uploaded gritty techno sets that caught the attention of KNTXT’s A&R team.

Why It Works for EDM: Tools Built for the Dancefloor

I’ve seen bedroom producers become festival staples using features tailored for electronic music culture:

Timed Comments on Drops: Fans dissect build-ups like sports analysts. When my friend’s track hit, a user commented at the 1:07 drop, “THIS WOBBLE GAVE ME AN OUT-OF-BODY EXPERIENCE.” That led to a collab with a French electro duo.

DJ Set Uploads: SoundCloud’s unlimited upload time lets you share full festival sets.

Geographic Heatmaps: SoundCloud’s stats revealed a producer’s track was trending in Tulum. He DM’d promoters there and landed a beach club residency—before he had a Spotify presence.

The Pandemic Pivot: How EDM Thrived on SoundCloud

When clubs shut down in 2020, the EDM scene moved to SoundCloud. DJs hosted “quarantine raves” by uploading live sets with timed visuals in the comments. SoundCloud even partnered with virtual festivals like Digital Mirage, waiving fees for artists—pumping millions back into the scene.

Amplify Your Reach: EDM-Specific Paid Hacks

1. Hypeddit-Powered Social Ads: Laser-Target the Right Crowd

SoundCloud’s social ads work best when paired with Hypeddit, a tool that lets you run giveaways (free track downloads) in exchange for follows/shares. Dr. Phunk used Hypeddit to promote his remix track Prada. He offered a free download to anyone who followed his SoundCloud and tagged two friends. Targeting fans of Lane 8 and Ben Böhmer, they spent $120 to reach 25k listeners. Result? 2,300 new followers and a sync deal with a yoga app’s meditation series.

Pro Tip: Hypeddit’s analytics show which cities stream your music most.

2. SoundCloud’s In-House Promo: Next Pro’s Spotlight Feature

If you’re on SoundCloud Next Pro, use Spotlight to pin your best track to the top of your profile. SoundCloud’s editorial team handpicks Spotlight tracks for their official playlists.

How to Get Noticed: Upload during SoundCloud’s “quiet hours” (weekday mornings EST). Editors often scout tracks when fewer artists are spamming the system.

3. RepostExchange + Whitelist Playlist Hacks

RepostExchange isn’t just for swapping reposts—it’s a backdoor to big playlist curators. Here’s how to hack it:

Whitelist Uploads: Before dropping a track, DM curators of playlists like Chill Electronic or Bass Nation and offer whitelist access (early upload permission).

Trade Collabs for Reposts: Offer to remix a playlist curator’s track in exchange for a playlist add.

Real Data: Tracks added to whitelist playlists see 70% more reposts in the first week (Hypeddit 2023 report).

How to Dominate the EDM Algorithm

Join Niche Groups: Dive into communities like #UKGarageGang or #PsytranceFamily.

Hashtag Like a Pro: #TranceTuesday, #DubstepFriday, and #HouseMusicHunt trend weekly.

Monetize Mixes: Use Repost by SoundCloud to distribute DJ sets to Spotify/Apple Music.

Hybrid Strategy:

Months 1-3: Drop free bootlegs (e.g., a tropical house flip of a 2000s pop hit) to build hype.

Month 4-5: Run Hypeddit campaigns targeting fans of specific DJs (e.g., “fans of Fred again… in London”).

Month 6: Use RepostExchange to partner with curators and score whitelist spots.

(Real example: A Denver-based bass music duo followed this plan, growing from 300 to 18k followers in 9 months. They are now open for smaller bass acts at Red Rocks afterparties.)

Upload that unreleased ID. Then slide into my DMs when you’re printing tickets for your first headline show.

Percussion sounds can make or break a track. I learned this the hard way in 2018 when I spent three hours trying to make a shaker loop for a tropical house remix, only to realize it sounded like a maraca filled with gravel. That’s when I got into Sylenth1, the synth that’s been a staple in dance music since its 2007 debut.

Step 1: Layering Oscillators for Texture

Start by opening Sylenth1 and initializing a blank preset.

OSC 1: Set the waveform to Pulse, octave to -1, and crank the voices to 8. Pan it slightly to the right (0.867). Why? The low octave adds weight, while the stereo spread gives a subtle “width” without muddying your mix. Fun fact: The Pulse wave’s hollow sound was famously used in 80s arcade games—think Space Invaders explosions.

OSC 2: Switch to Noise, drop the voices to 4, and shift the phase to 79 degrees. Pan this one hard left (-1.333). Noise might seem chaotic (like broken TV static), but when shaped right, it adds grit. I once used a similar noise layer in a techno track, and my buddy swore it sounded like “bacon frying in rhythm.”

Step 2: Sculpting the Amp Envelope

Percussions are all about timing. Set your amp envelope like this:

Attack: 0.05 ms (instant punch, like a snare hit)

Decay: 3.4 sec (lets the sound breathe but doesn’t overstay)

Sustain: 0 (no lingering tail—think sharp claps)

Release: 2.7 sec (smooth fade-out to avoid abrupt cuts)

This mimics the natural decay of a real drum. For context, a 909 kick’s decay is ~300 ms, but we’re stretching it here for a dramatic, cinematic effect.

Step 3: Filtering for Character

Filter A: Choose Bandpass mode. Set the cutoff to 3.033 kHz and the resolution to 4.8. Bandpass is underrated for percussion—it carves out mids, like scooping the “meat” of the sound. Back in my college DJ days, I’d kill for this trick to make hi-hats cut through basement party speakers.

Filter Control: Bump the cutoff to 5.133 kHz and resonance to 10. This adds brightness and a metallic “twang.” Imagine tapping a soda can with a drumstick—that’s the vibe.

Step 4: Compression for Punch

Head to your DAW’s compressor (or use Sylenth1’s built-in one). Apply:

Ratio: 100:1 (aggressive squashing—this isn’t a gentle hug, it’s a vice grip)

Threshold: -22 dB (catches even the quietest transients)

Attack: 15 ms (lets the initial “thud” through)

Release: 150 ms (smoothly ducks the tail)

This is how I salvaged a limp kick drum in a trap beat last year. The artist said it “hit like a UPS truck,” which I’ll take as a compliment.

Step 5: Final Tweaks & Humanization

Turn down the synth’s master volume to -6 dB to avoid clipping. For realism, add slight timing variations: nudge OSC 2’s phase randomly or tweak panning by 2-3%. My go-to move? Automate the filter cutoff during drops—it turns a basic perk into a living, breathing element.

Download the Preset + 30 More

Ready to skip the tweaking? Download this preset here. I’ve also dropped 30 free percussion presets—from tribal toms to glitchy clicks—inspired by genres like UK garage and ambient. (Pro tip: Check your spam folder. My emails sometimes think they’re “too cool” for the inbox.)

Final Thought: Sylenth1’s strength lies in simplicity. Unlike modern wavetable synths, it forces you to listen, not just scroll presets. Next time you’re stuck, ask, “What would a 2000s trance producer do?” Spoiler: They’d turn knobs until magic happens.

P.S. If your percussion still sounds like gravel, hit reply. I’ve got a folder of shameful 2018 samples to make you feel better.

Have you ever picked up your phone and heard that familiar beep when you call someone, thinking, "I bet I could recreate that sound on my synth"? I definitely have. I remember this one afternoon, still in college, where my cat jumped onto the keyboard while fiddling around with Sylenth1. That unplanned moment led me to that blend of nostalgia and creativity, just the right tone reminiscent of early mobile phones.

Step 1: Setting Up the Oscillator

Open Oscillator 1 and set the waveform to saw. A saw wave by nature buzzes and also has a raspy quality to it, which is perfect to emulate the brittle, electronic type of a telephone tone. Set the oscillator to a single voice, which ensures that the sound remains focused and uncluttered. That's similar to how a phone delivers a clear, unmistakable ring without any harmonies complicating the signal. I remember the first time I tried using a sine wave instead; it sounded more like a dial-up modem than a phone call, and even my professor couldn't stop laughing at the unexpected result.

Step 2: Configuring the Amplitude Envelope

Next up is the amplitude envelope, affectionately known as AMP ENV. This is an envelope that controls the sound from the instant you hit a key until it disappears into the ether. Now, for a telephone call tone, you would want the sound to start off straight away. Set it at 0 ms attack time—instant start. There is no decay phase, which means the sound doesn’t gradually decrease before reaching full volume. Turn the sustain high, at a level of 10, so the tone remains at full strength until you release the key. Also add a short release time of 0.6 milliseconds to allow a gentle tail so that the sound doesn’t cut off abruptly. These settings simulate a phone tone—a sound that’s both immediate and crisp.

Step 3: Shaping the Sound with a Filter

After establishing the basic sound, you need to shape it further with a filter. Choose a bandpass filter because it effectively isolates a narrow range of frequencies, much like a tunnel that lets only specific sounds through. In this case, set the cutoff frequency to 2.9 kHz, which is where much of the character of the phone tone resides, and I added a resonance of 2.3 to give it a slight ring.

Step 4: Fine-Tuning the Filter Control Settings

Move on to the filter control settings to fine-tune the sound even more. Increase the cutoff to 4.5 kHz, push the resonance up to 10 to emphasize the selected frequencies further, and set the key track to 4.3 to maintain consistency across different notes. Enabling the warm drive feature added just the right amount of subtle saturation, reminiscent of the gritty texture you’d expect from an old landline.

Step 5: Adding Effects for Authenticity

Once you have the basic tone dialed in, it’s time to add some effects to capture that authentic, digital edge. Apply a bitcrush distortion effect with an amount set to 6.667, which might sound like a peculiar number, but trust me on this one. Apply the effect fully, with the wet parameter at 100%, infusing the sound with a delightful digital crunch that mirrors early telephone signals. To simulate the slight ambiance of a call connecting through a network, also add reverb at a mix level of 50%. Keep the reverb size at 0 to avoid any spaciousness, ensuring the tone stays mono and true to its origins, while setting the width to 100% to maintain clarity. This step brings the tone to life, blending modern synthesis with the classic aesthetics of vintage communication technology.

I always believe that the magic of sound design lies in experimentation and personal connection. There were times when my settings produced tones that felt too harsh or too thin, and it was during these moments that I learned the true art of tweaking. Every slight adjustment is a step in the journey of rediscovering sound, and sometimes a playful mistake—like that one time my patch accidentally sounded like a dial-up connection—reminds you of the unpredictable nature of creativity.

I’ve spent time refining these settings and saved them as a preset, ready for you to download and experiment with in your own projects. You can download it directly from my website; it’s a simple way to save time and get right into the fun of sound design without missing out on any of the creative exploration.

Happy patching, and may your next tone be as iconic as that very first ring.

Swedish House Mafia’s “Don’t You Worry Child”: The Anthem That Saved My Summer

Swedish House Mafia—Axwell, Steve Angello, and Sebastian Ingrosso—were the trio that made electronic music cool for people who still thought “EDM” stood for “Extremely Dull Music. They dropped “Don’t You Worry Child” in 2012, and it was everywhere. Grocery stores. Weddings. My cousin’s questionable karaoke nights.

The lyrics are simple but hit like a freight train. A father tells his son, “Heaven’s got a plan for you.” It’s about hope when life feels like a dumpster fire. For me, that summer was a mess—failed classes, a breakup, and a part-time job scrubbing toilets. But every time this song played, I felt like maybe the universe wasn’t entirely against me.

The song’s melody is built around a church organ sample. Yep, that epic sound you hear? It’s basically a hymn cranked up to 11. The vocals by John Martin (not the Game of Thrones guy) were recorded in one take. Legend says he walked into the studio, sang it raw, and left. No autotune, just pure emotion.

Flash forward to 2018. My best friend’s wedding. The DJ thought it’d be hilarious to play “Don’t You Worry Child” during the father-daughter dance. Cue 200 confused guests shuffling awkwardly to a dance banger. But halfway through, something magical happened. The bride’s 80-year-old grandma grabbed a mic and yelled, “Turn it up!” Suddenly, the dance floor exploded. Even the priest joined in. Thanks, SHM, for saving the DJ's career.

Why This Song Still Slaps

The Key Change: At 3:24, the song shifts keys like it’s climbing a staircase to heaven. Your soul leaves your body. Guaranteed.

Nostalgia Bomb: It’s a time capsule of neon bracelets, glow sticks, and believing “Tomorrowland” was an actual country.

Universal Feels: Whether you’re 15 or 50, the message sticks. Life sucks sometimes, but… heaven’s got a plan.

They often closed their set with “Don’t You Worry Child,” and the sky erupted. Fireworks burst in time with the beat, painting the crowd in gold and pink. Thousands of attendees—sticky with sweat, hoarse from screaming—stood frozen, then exploded into cheers. The organ swelled, the bass dropped, and for one chaotic, perfect moment, it felt like the entire world was singing along.

If you’re reading this, chances are you’ve been scratching your head trying to figure out how to create that perfect tom drum sound in Sylenth1. Don’t worry, I’ve been there too. In fact, let me tell you a little story.

Back in 2015, I was working on my first ever EDM track. I had just downloaded Sylenth1 and thought I was ready to conquer the world of electronic music. Spoiler alert: I wasn’t. My "drums" sounded like someone dropping pots and pans in a kitchen. It wasn’t pretty. But over time, with a lot of trial and error (and a few embarrassing moments), I finally figured it out.

Step 1: Setting Up Oscillators—The Heart of Your Sound

The oscillators are the foundation of your tom drum sound. Think of them as the raw material you’ll sculpt into something beautiful. Let’s start by configuring OSC 1.

First, set the waveform to Saw. This gives us that rich, full-bodied tone that’s perfect for toms. Next, drop the octave down by one (-1). This lowers the pitch and gives us that deep, resonant sound we’re after. Now, crank up the voices to 8. More voices mean more thickness, which is essential for a powerful tom sound. To add some stereo width, move the pan slightly to the right (2.667). This makes the sound feel wider and more immersive. Turn on Retrig. This ensures each note starts fresh, giving your tom a cleaner attack. Finally, adjust the fine-tune to 0.260. This subtle detuning adds character and depth to the sound.

Now, let’s move on to OSC 2. This oscillator will complement OSC 1 and add even more richness to the sound. Set the waveform to Saw again. Drop the octave down by one (-1), just like OSC 1. Keep the voices at 8, because who doesn’t love a thick, beefy sound? Move the pan further to the right (3.067) for even more stereo separation. This creates a sense of space in your mix. Rotate the phase shift to 57 degrees. Phase shifting introduces phase cancellation between the two oscillators, adding complexity and depth to the sound. Turn on Retrig to ensure each note starts cleanly. Adjust the fine-tune to 0.06. This slight detuning helps differentiate OSC 2 from OSC 1, making the overall sound more interesting.

Step 2: Shaping the Sound with AMP Envelope—Giving It Life

The amplitude envelope controls how the volume of the sound changes over time. This is where we give our tom its signature punch and decay.

Start by setting the attack to 0.05. A quick attack ensures the tom has that sharp, punchy start. Increase the decay to 4.045. This allows the sound to sustain briefly before fading out, giving it a natural, drum-like feel. Bring the sustain all the way down to 0. Since we’re creating a percussive sound, we don’t need much sustain. Set the release to 0.5. This ensures the sound tails off smoothly when you release the key, avoiding any abrupt cutoffs.

Step 3: Filtering for Depth—Carving Out the Perfect Tone

Filters are like chisels for sound—they help carve out the frequencies that make your tom sound rich and full. For this step, we’ll use a bandpass filter.

Choose Bandpass as the filter type. Bandpass filters allow only a narrow range of frequencies through, which is perfect for creating focused, resonant sounds. Start with a cutoff of 5. This sets the center frequency of the bandpass filter. Boost the resonance to 3. Resonance emphasizes the cutoff frequency, giving the tom its “ring.” Add a touch of distortion by setting the drive to 6. This warms up the sound and adds a bit of grit.

In the Filter Control section, bump up the cutoff to 5.2. This tweaks the center frequency for a more refined tone. Push the resonance to 3.9. This enhances the ringing effect, making the tom sound more dynamic and lively.

Step 4: Adding Effects—Polishing the Sound

To really bring the tom to life, we’ll add some effects. These small touches can make a big difference in how your sound feels.

For distortion, select Overdrive as the distortion type. Overdrive adds warmth and character without being too harsh. Set the amount to 2.7. This level of distortion enhances the low-end thump while keeping the high-end crisp. Max out the wet/dry knob to 100%. This ensures the full effect is applied, giving the tom a more aggressive, punchy presence.

For EQ, equalization lets you boost or cut specific frequency ranges. For our tom, boost the bass by +10 dB at around 446 Hz. This enhances the low-end thump, making the tom sound powerful and impactful. Add a bit of sparkle by boosting the treble by +7.5 dB at 3.5 kHz. This brightens the sound and ensures it cuts through the mix.

Step 5: Modulation Envelopes—Adding Dynamics

Modulation envelopes control various parameters over time. Let’s tweak these to add some movement and interest to the sound.

For Mod Env 1, set the attack to 3.045. This delays the onset of the modulation, creating a smoother transition. Set the decay to 3.636. This determines how long the modulation lasts before fading out. Both the sustain and release should be set to 10. This ensures the modulation remains active throughout the sound’s duration. Dial the cutoff down to -6.8. This makes the filter sweep dynamically as the sound plays, adding a sense of motion.

For Mod Env 2, set the attack to 7.5. This introduces a longer delay before the modulation kicks in. Set the decay to 2.5. This keeps the modulation short and snappy. Set the sustain to 10 and the release to 0. This ensures the modulation happens quickly and disappears immediately after the note ends. Lower the pitch by -2.2. This creates a subtle pitch bend effect, giving the tom a more organic feel. Boost the resonance to 4.4. This enhances the ringing effect, making the sound more vibrant and alive.

Step 6: LFO for Movement—Adding That Extra Spark

Finally, let’s add some movement using an LFO. LFOs (Low-Frequency Oscillators) introduce periodic changes to the sound, making it feel more dynamic and engaging.

Set the rate to 1/4D. This means the modulation will happen once every quarter note with a triplet feel, adding a rhythmic element to the sound. Set the gain to 3.8. This controls the intensity of the modulation. Boost the pitch to 6.4. The LFO will subtly modulate the pitch, adding a sense of motion to the tom.

Final Thoughts

A killer tom drum in Sylenth1! Take a moment to play around with the settings—you might discover something new that works better for your track. Music production is all about experimentation, after all.

By the way, did you know that the word “tom” actually comes from the Japanese word tomo, meaning friend? Musicians back in the day thought the deep, resonant sound of these drums sounded friendly and approachable. Who knew?

Church bells have a timeless sound that can be replicated using Sylenth1. Begin with the oscillators for a wobbly, layered sound, set voices, and add a detune. Set the amp envelope by adjusting the attack, decay, sustain, and release. Filter Magic at lowpass softens the abrasive highs and gives an edgy, aged character. Modulate the filter by setting the cutoff, adding attack, decay, sustain, and release. Then add reverb with a long decay, EQ to cut muddy lows, and gentle compression to glue it all together.

Remember 2012? The world didn’t end (thanks, Mayans), but EDM sure exploded. Skrillex was making parents nervous, Swedish House Mafia was selling out stadiums, and somewhere in the Netherlands, a 24-year-old named Robbert van de Corput—better known as Hardwell—was cooking up a track that would become the national anthem of festival season: “Spaceman.”

The Drop Heard ‘Round the World

Say, it’s 3 AM at a neon-soaked warehouse rave in Brooklyn. Your friend Dave, who’s had one too many Red Bulls, grabs your arm and yells, “THIS IS THE SONG THAT MADE ME FAIL MY SEMESTER!” The second those iconic laser-beam synths hit, the crowd becomes a single organism. The drop erupts, and suddenly, you’re not in a sweaty warehouse anymore—you’re hurtling through the cosmos on a spaceship made of pure serotonin.

That’s the magic of “Spaceman.” It’s not just a song; it’s a cultural reset button.

The Anatomy of an Anthem

Hardwell didn’t overcomplicate things here. The melody is so simple, you could teach it to a toddler (or a tipsy Dave). A four-note synth riff, a chest-thumping kick drum, and a buildup that feels like NASA’s Mission Control counting down: “3… 2… 1… BLASTOFF!” Then comes the drop—a dizzying barrage of electro-house energy that’s equal parts chaos and precision.

A Track That United Planets (and Playlists)

“Spaceman” wasn’t just a hit—it was a phenomenon. It topped Beatport’s charts for weeks, dominated Tomorrowland sets, and even infiltrated sports arenas. I once heard it played at a minor-league baseball game during the seventh-inning stretch. The crowd looked confused but promptly started fist-pumping.

Hardwell rode this track to superstardom. By 2013, he was DJ Mag’s No. 1 DJ, playing marathon sets from Ibiza to Coachella. His Ultra Miami 2013 set, where he dropped a bootleg version of “Spaceman,” is still legendary. I wasn’t there, but my cousin swears he saw a guy in an astronaut suit crowd-surfing. (I choose to believe him.)

The Legacy: From Retirement to Resurrection

In 2018, Hardwell shocked fans by retiring from touring, leaving many to wonder if “Spaceman” would fade into EDM nostalgia. But like any good superhero, he came back. In 2022, he returned with a new techno-inspired sound, but guess what still made the setlist? Yep. That riff. Those lasers. That feeling.

Final Verdict: Why “Spaceman” Still Soars

Several years later, “Spaceman” hasn’t just aged—it’s evolved. It’s a time capsule of EDM’s golden era, a workout playlist staple, and a reminder that sometimes, the simplest ideas hit the hardest.

So next time you hear those synths, do yourself a favor: turn it up. Grab a glow stick. And maybe text Dave. He’s probably still failing semesters somewhere.

Over to You:
Where were you when “Spaceman” first hijacked your eardrums? Share your glitter-covered memory in the comments. 🚀

When "Wake Me Up" finally hit the airwaves, it short-circuited the music world. A Swedish EDM prodigy (real name Tim Bergling) had dared to marry thumping house beats with… bluegrass? Critics scoffed. "A hillbilly hoedown at a rave?" one snarked. But Avicii, ever the quiet rebel, had stumbled onto genius. Partnering with soul powerhouse Aloe Blacc and Incubus guitarist Mike Einziger, he crafted a track that was equal parts Nashville honky-tonk and Ibiza nightclub. The result? A song that topped charts in 22 countries, racked up 2 billion+ streams, and became the most Shazam-ed track in history at the time.

The song’s now-iconic banjo line was originally played on a MIDI keyboard. Einziger later re-recorded it on an actual banjo… while recovering from hand surgery. Talk about dedication.

The Lyric That Became a Generation’s Mantra

Beneath the foot-stomping melody lies a lyric that punched millennials right in the existential dread. “All this time I was finding myself, and I didn’t know I was lost.” For a generation raised on Instagram FOMO and economic meltdowns, it was a permission slip to admit, Yeah, I have no clue what I’m doing either.

In 2017, a friend backpacking through Thailand emailed me: “Played ‘Wake Me Up’ on loop during a monsoon in Chiang Mai. Felt like Avicii wrote it for my quarter-life crisis.” Turns out he wasn’t alone. The song became an anthem for gap-year kids, burnout corporate warriors, and yes, even my Aunt Karen’s Zumba class.

Avicii’s Quiet Revolution (And The Price He Paid)

The success of "Wake Me Up" marked a turning point—and not just for Avicii, but EDM. Suddenly DJs were collaborating with folk artists; festivals booked the banjo player alongside the laser show. Meanwhile, behind it all, Tim was crumbling. The relentless touring (over 800 shows in 8 years) and industry pressure led to his shocking retirement in 2016. Two years later, at 28, he died by suicide, leaving behind a letter that read, “I could not go on any longer… My life is all about stress.”

In 2019, a star-studded tribute concert in Stockholm raised $1.6M for mental health charities. Artists like Rita Ora and Adam Lambert covered his hits, but when Aloe Blacc sang Wake Me Up solo under a single spotlight? There wasn’t a dry eye in the house.

Why It Still Hits Different Till Now

Post-pandemic, the song’s lyrics feel prophetic. “I tried carrying the weight of the world, but I only have two hands.” After years of lockdowns and chaos, we’re all still “feeling our way through the darkness,” aren’t we? The genius of Wake Me Up is that it’s both a party starter and a therapy session—a reminder that it’s okay to be lost, as long as we keep dancing through the fog.

Final Thought: Next time you hear those opening banjo plucks, do me a favor: Crank it up. Sing like no one’s listening. And maybe send up a little thanks to the shy Swedish kid who taught us all to find light in the lost places.

Cut the fairy tales. In the ‘90s, you’d mail a cassette tape to a label and pray. Today? You need more than prayer—you need a strategy (and a credit card). Talent helps, but money greases the wheels faster. Here’s how to hack the system, with a wink and a nod to the industry’s open secrets.

1. Paid Demo Submissions: The “Fast Pass” to A&Rs

Forget mailing CDs. Platforms like LabelRadar, SubmitHub, Groover, and Virpp let you skip the demo queue—for a fee. Labels from Spinnin’ to Dirtybird quietly scout these platforms, and for a few bucks per submission, you can shove your track into their inbox.

Back in the ‘90s, Tiesto faxed demos; today, a producer once spent $50 on Groover submissions and landed a deal with a French house label. Virpp’s EDM-only focus slices through the noise of generic submissions. Treat it as Tinder for tracks: swipe right on labels, but brace yourself for radio silence.

2. PR & Marketing Blitz: Pay to Play the Game

Hire a PR agency like Cyber PR or The Catalyst Publicity to scream about your track until someone listens. One bedroom producer dropped $2k on a PR campaign, scored features on blogs like YourEDM, and suddenly STMPD came knocking. It’s pricey—consider trading avocado toast for instant noodles.

3. Ghost Producers: The Industry’s Worst-Kept Secret

Skip years of mastering synths by buying a pre-made banger. Platforms like SoundBetter, BeatStars, and House of Tracks (EDM’s unofficial black market) let you shop for tracks as casually as browsing Amazon.

History repeats: even David Guetta’s “Titanium” had ghostwriters. House of Tracks operates as the Ikea of dance music—assemble the pieces and claim credit. Pray your ghost producer stays sober enough to avoid spilling secrets on social media.

4. Networking Events: Bribes & Booze

Secure face time with label execs by buying a VIP pass to ADE (Amsterdam Dance Event) or Miami Music Week ($1k+), then “accidentally” spill a drink on someone important. Take inspiration from the artist who slid a USB into a promoter’s cocktail—they listened, after drying it off.

At minimum, you’ll leave with free merch and a story for Reddit.

5. Playlist Payola: Buy Your Streams

Labels salivate over big numbers. Use services like PlaylistPush or SoundPlate to buy your way onto Spotify playlists. Payola’s illegal on radio, but Spotify’s algorithms turn a blind eye to “organic” 100k streams.

The Fine Print…

Money opens doors, but even the fattest wallet can’t salvage a bad track. Invest smart: $500 on a ghost-produced banger from House of Tracks plus $300 on PR might just land a deal. Remember, David Guetta still had to fake enthusiasm at festivals.

When you think of dance music, one country inevitably comes to mind: the Netherlands. This small nation, known for its tulips, windmills, and bicycles, has become the undisputed global hub of electronic dance music (EDM). From legendary DJs to iconic festivals and groundbreaking record labels, the Dutch have cemented their place in the history of dance music.

The Birthplace of Legends

The Netherlands has produced an astonishing number of world-renowned DJs and producers. Names like Tiësto, Armin van Buuren, Martin Garrix, and Afrojack are synonymous with EDM. These artists didn’t just rise to fame—they redefined the genre.

Take Martin Garrix, for example. At just 17 years old, he dropped Animals, a track that became a global anthem and catapulted him to superstardom. Today, he’s a household name, headlining festivals and running his own label, STMPD Records. Then there’s Tiësto, the legend of trance, who has been a trailblazer since the ’90s. His track Adagio for Strings is still a masterpiece that gives me goosebumps every time I hear it.

And let’s not forget Armin van Buuren, the king of trance, whose weekly radio show A State of Trance has been a lifeline for trance fans worldwide. These artists aren’t just DJs—they’re cultural icons who’ve put Dutch dance music on the map.

The Mecca of Dance Music Festivals

If you’re a dance music fan, the Netherlands is your pilgrimage site. The country hosts some of the biggest and most iconic festivals in the world.

Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE): This is the Coachella of EDM. Every October, the city of Amsterdam transforms into a five-day rave, with over 2,500 artists performing across 200 venues. From intimate club sets to massive arena shows, ADE is a celebration of everything dance music.

Amsterdam Music Festival (AMF): Held during ADE, AMF is where the DJ Mag Top 100 is announced. It’s a night of high-energy performances and jaw-dropping production.

Tomorrowland Winter (Netherlands Edition): Okay, I made that up, but with festivals like Mysteryland, Decibel Outdoor, and Defqon.1, the Netherlands doesn’t need a winter edition—it’s already a year-round party.

The Power of Dutch Record Labels

Behind every great DJ is a great record label, and the Netherlands has some of the most influential ones in the industry.

Spinnin’ Records: This label is a powerhouse, responsible for launching the careers of countless artists. With sublabels like Musical Freedom (Tiësto’s baby) and Maxximize, Spinnin’ has its fingers in every corner of the EDM pie.

Revealed Recordings: Founded by Hardwell, this label has been a breeding ground for big-room bangers.

Armada Music: Armin van Buuren’s brainchild, Armada, is a trance lover’s paradise.

Protocol Recordings: Nicky Romero’s label is known for its cutting-edge releases and high-energy tracks.

These labels aren’t just businesses—they’re cultural institutions that shape the sound of dance music.

Anecdotes and Personal Experiences

I’ll never forget the first time I heard Ferry Corsten’s Punk at a friend’s house. The track was so electrifying that I immediately went down a rabbit hole of Dutch trance. Fast forward a few years, and I found myself at a local club where the DJ dropped Nicky Romero’s Toulouse. The crowd went wild, and I realized just how much Dutch DJs have influenced the global dance music scene.

Another memorable moment was watching Hardwell’s 2013 Ultra set online. His energy, track selection, and stage presence were next-level. It’s no wonder he’s won the DJ Mag Top 100 twice.

A Rich History of Innovation

The Netherlands’ love affair with dance music dates back decades. In the ’80s and ’90s, Dutch DJs like Ben Liebrand and Peter Slaghuis were pioneers of remixing and sampling. The rise of gabber and hardcore in the ’90s, led by artists like Paul Elstak and The Prophet, showcased the Dutch ability to push boundaries and create new subgenres.

Fast forward to today, and the Netherlands continues to innovate. Artists like Reinier Zonneveld are bringing live techno to the forefront, while Imanu is pushing the boundaries of bass music.

Humor and Quirks

Let’s be honest—Dutch DJs have some of the best names in the business. Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano? Iconic. Bassjackers? Sounds like a group of bass-loving pirates. And don’t even get me started on Angerfist—a name that perfectly captures the intensity of hardcore.

Then there’s the Dutch sense of humor. I once saw a video of Afrojack and Steve Aoki having a cake-throwing contest mid-set. Only in the Netherlands would a DJ turn a stage into a bakery.

Why the Netherlands Reigns Supreme

The Netherlands’ dominance in dance music isn’t just about talent—it’s about culture. The Dutch have an innate ability to bring people together through music. Whether it’s a massive festival or an underground rave, the sense of community is palpable.

So, if you’re a dance music fan, put the Netherlands on your bucket list. Whether you’re grooving to Martin Garrix at AMF, exploring the underground scene at ADE, or simply vibing to Tiësto on your headphones, the Dutch have something for everyone.

And who knows? Maybe one day I’ll make it to Amsterdam, grab a stroopwafel, and lose myself in the beats of the world’s greatest DJs. Until then, I’ll keep dreaming of that Dutch dance music magic.

What’s your favorite Dutch DJ or festival? Let me know in the comments!
